EPONAL 376

Special epoxy primer suitable on wet substrates

Uses

EPONAL 376 is a two-component solvent-free epoxy resin especially designed for flooring application.
 
It can be used:
  • in industrial and pedestrian epoxy and polyurethane flooring system: as a bonding primer on damp concrete subfloors or on subfloors likely to suffer later from rising damp
  • as a waterproofing barrier coating in casing applications
  • as a  waterproofing barrier for flooring applications, which has been especially designed to block residual moisture in concrete and cement/sand screeds prior to application of our self-levelling underlayments and to installation of floor coverings. It can, even in areas subject to hydrostatic pressure, provide a surface damp proof barrier where a structural DPM is not present or is ineffective. EPONAL 376 allows for the early installation of moisture sensitive floor coverings in fast track building operations.
  • as an epoxy injection resin for crack bridging of concrete, wood, etc.

Safety:

IMPORTANT: before embarking on any work involving EPONAL 376 the separate Product Safety Data Sheet must be studied carefully by those carrying out the work. PREVENT skin and eye contact. Do not breathe vapours. Use protective gloves when mixing or using. Wear protective clothes and safety glasses.

    

Shelf life:

Up to 12 months in the original, unopened containers, stored in a dry place at +10°C and +25°C.

Application

During application and cure, substrate temperature must always be at least 3°C above the dew point temperature.
 
PREPARATION
Preparation should be in accordance with building standards. Subfloors must be clean, sound, of adequate compressive and tensile strength (at least 25 MPa and 1.5 MPa respectively after 28 days cure for new concrete). They must be free from laitance, cracks and structural defects; clean and free from dust, grease, curing compounds, sealers or any other contaminants that would inhibit proper bond. During application substrates must not be subject to water seepage and hydrostatic pressure. Depending on subfloor condition and type, subfloors are treated by grit blasting, mechanical planing, scabbing, sandblasting, high-pressure water washing or chemical stripping. After mechanical treatment of a subfloor, thoroughly vacuum all dust.
Steel and metal decking should be grit blasted, grinded or sand blasted, then degreased with MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). Prime metal surface with EPONAL 990, after curing sand and degrease it with MEK just before over-coating.
 
 
APPLICATION
 
MIXING
Slowly add the hardener into resin (part A + B) while mixing, mix thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes with an electric drill and mixing paddle (speed: not more than 300 rpm in order to avoid air bubbles formation).
 
1. EPOXY AND POLYURETHANE SYSTEMS:
a) as a primer (on damp substrates not subject to water seepage or risk of rising damp after coating application)
Apply immediately the mixture using a roller, brush or a squeegee at approx. 300-400 g/m² depending on roughness, porosity and temperature of the substrate.
b) as a waterproofing coating
Apply immediately the mixture using a roller, brush or a squeegee at approx. 300-400 g/m² depending on roughness, porosity and temperature of the substrate. After curing of the first coat 24 hours at +20°C, apply the second coat at a rate of 300-400 g/m² using a roller or a squeegee. If epoxy, polyurethane or hydraulic coatings are used as a finish coat, apply sand over the second coat of Eponal 376 still wet (particle size maximum 0.8mm). After curing of the second coat remove excess of sand. Apply epoxy, polyurethane or hydraulic coating.

2. PROTECTIVE WATERPROOFING BARRIER COATING PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF SELF-LEVELLING COMPOUNDS AND SOFT FLOORCOVERINGS
a) Damp substrates not subject to water seepage or risk of rising damp after application
Concrete subfloors: apply EPONAL 376 (part A+B) using a notched trowel n°3-B2 for smooth subfloors (approx. 400 g/m²) or C1 for rough subfloors (800 g/m²). Vertical areas in wall/floor juction should be treated with Eponal 376: using a brush apply the resin on the heigth of at least 15mm (this height is equal to the width of the whole system: self-levelling compound + adhesive + floorcoverning).
 
Sand application
Broadcast a uniform layer of sand into still wet coat of resin, ensure that the whole area is covered with excess of dry sand type S409 (particle size: 0.4-0.9mm, coverage: 3 to 5 kg/m²). Gradually as the work progresses, keep a 5-10 cm wide strip free of sand around the covered area, in order to be able to link up with fresh resin when covering subsequent areas.
When applying the resin onto impervious substrates (e.g. floor tiles) allow a waiting time of approx. 30-45 minutes at 20°C prior to sand application.
 
b) Substrates with potential risk of hydrostatic counter-pressure after application
On substrates likely to suffer from hydrostatic pressure, EPONAL 376 should be applied in 2 coats (400 g/m²/coat). The second coat is applied after the first one is set for walking (18 hours at 20°C). Broadcast sand only into the second coat still wet.
 
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is necessary to wear nailed soles in order to be able to walk on the fresh layer of resin.
 
Curing
Allow to dry for 24 hours at 20°C, 48 hours at +10°C, before removing excess of sand using an industrial vacuum cleaner. The remaining sand must be firmly bonded to the coat of EPONAL 376.
 
IMPORTANT: EPONAL 376 exact consumption depends on roughness, porosity, working temperature and the area to be covered.
 
3. EPOXY INJECTION RESIN FOR FILLING CRACKS (from 0.6 to 3mm width)
Using a triangular scraper open the cracks, then inject the blend (part A+B) using an air-pressure gun. The caulking can also be made by using trowellable mortar. In this case, mix EPONAL 376 (blended) with sand prior to caulking. Finish with excess of resin, spread out over the cracks and its borders and broadcat sand in fresh product to promote future adhesion.
 
Cleaning
Immediately clean spillages and tools with warm water and soap or with a solvent (e.g. trichlorethylene or Methyl Ethyl Ketone) whilst the product is still wet. Cured product can only be removed mechanically.
