EPONAL PRIMEPOX

Water-based epoxy primer and bonding agent

Uses

EPONAL PRIMEPOX Surface Primer is a two-component water-based epoxy primer and bonding agent for the preparation of most substrates, particularly smooth or dense surfaces e.g. mastic asphalt, dry power float concrete, semi-flexible and vinyl-asbestos floor tiles, waterproof and fireproof particleboards, plywood and parquet, ceramic tiles, terrazzo, ceramics and resin coatings prior to the application of Bostik smoothing and levelling compounds.
EPONAL PRIMEPOX can be used on traces of hard, sound and water-tight adhesive residues (bituminous, acrylic, vinyl, neoprene, alcohol-based resins, polyurethane, epoxy, etc) and existing polyurethane or epoxy floor paints, on dense impervious substrates.
Also suitable as a protective primer and bonding agent on moisture sensitive surfaces e.g. particleboard and anhydrite screed.
For interior use only.

Benefits

  • Solvent-free
  • Quick drying
  • Acts as a bonding agent on impervious surfaces
  • Easy to use: applied with a roller
  • Odourless: can be used in all locations

Properties

Physical:

  • Primer Type: Solvent-free, water-based 2-component epoxy resin
  • Colour: red
  • Dry film colour: translucent pink, with slight residual tackiness
  • Specific gravity: approx. 1.1 ±0.01 g/cm3
  • Flashpoint: Non-flammable
  • Working temperature : Preferably between +10°C and +25°C. Material and substrate temperature not below +10°C
  • Mixing ratio: 1:1 by weight or volume or 1:2 water-diluted for absorbent cement screeds.
  • Pot life: approx. 2 hours at +20°C
  • Drying time: approx. 2 hours for adequately absorbent substrates at +23°C, relative humidity of 50 %
  • Dry for floor covering: must be covered after 24 hours (at +23°C, relative humidity of 50 %)

Consumption:

Approx. 100-200 g/m² of mixed primer, depending on the substrate and method of application.

Safety:

IMPORTANT: before embarking on any work involving EPONAL PRIMEPOX Primer the separate Product Safety Data Sheet must be studied carefully by those carrying out the work. PREVENT skin and eye contact. Do not breathe vapours. Prevent spillages. Keep away from children and animals.

Shelf life:

Up to 6 months in the original, unopened container, stored at +5°C and +30°C and protected from frost. Frost-sensitive.

Application

PREPARATION
Preparation should be in accordance with building standards. Subfloors must be sound, of adequate tensile and compressive strength; free from laitance, cracks and structural defects; clean and free from dust, grease, curing compounds, sealers or any other contaminants that would inhibit proper bond. EPONAL 336 Moisture Vapour Barrier coating may be required where the residual water content is too high, especially common in new construction.
Ceramic tiles should be checked and re-fixed if necessary. Subfloors must be free from residues of paint, wax and grease.
Residues of old adhesives must be tested to verify adhesion to the surface. Scrape away all loose and weakly bonded coating. Adhesive residues that are hard, sound and water-tight should be mechanically cut-back to a minimum. Soft and weak adhesive residues and smoothing underlayments should be completely removed.
Semi-flexible tiles must be tested to verify their adhesion, they should be firmly bonded to the background. If the floor tiles are easily removable, remove them completely. Remove the residues of cleaning substances and dirt on the surface; rinse and allow to dry.
Painted surfaces: check the adhesion between the paint and the surface or eventually between the paint and self-levelling compounds. Any loose and weakly bonded coating should be removed. After grinding/sanding the paint remove any dust or grease with a dry solvent such as MEK
Old parquet and wooden floors must be tested to verify adhesion to the surface. Fix any loose floorboards. Residues of wax, varnish, dust, paint or loose coatings should be removed.
Waterproof and fireproof particle boards, plasterboards must be firmly bonded (tongued and grooved) and have good adhesion to the background. Moisture content of wooden floors must be between 7 and 11%. Ensure sufficient ventilation of wooden floors.
Underfloor heating systems must comply with current building regulations. In all cases drying time must be respected. Turn off the heating 48 hours before starting the work. The heating should be turned up to its operating temperatures gradually, in stages over 48 hours after laying the floor covering.

APPLICATION
For adequately absorbent and impervious substrates, the primer is used undiluted  in the ratio 1:1, mix components A + B  in a clean container until an even, non-marbled pink colour is achieved. Use an electric drill and mixing paddle (< 500 rpm).
For absorbent substrate the primer must be diluted. Dilute one volume of primer in two volumes of water. For 10 kg primer (A+B) add 20 litres of water, stir until a uniform mixture is obtained.
For pore sealing application of several subsequent layers may be necessary.
Apply the primer evenly in a thin coat. Do not over apply and avoid puddle formation. Allow to dry for approx. 2 hours (depending on the substrate, ventilation, humidity and temperature conditions) to a translucent pink, tacky film.
Only perform subsequent work after complete drying. If in doubt delay.
Apply with foam or short pile roller, paint brush or squeegee.

Bostik smoothing and levelling underlayments should be applied after complete drying.
