EPONAL 990

Uses

EPONAL 990 is a two-component water-based epoxy resin that can be used as :
- a protective primer for concrete structures in industrial and pedestrian epoxy systems
- a primer for steel and metal structures
- a binder for repair mortars and industrial tile grouting

Benefits

-  "Waiting" primer
-  Has excellent adhesion to dry or damp concrete, metal decking
-  Can be diluted with water
-  Economic coverage (100 to 200 g/m² depending on substrate).

Application

Application conditions
Working temperature: + 10° to + 25°C
Relative humidity: 80%
During application and cure, substrate temperature must always be at least 3°C above the dew point temperature.

PREPARATION
Preparation should be in accordance with building standards. Subfloors must be clean, sound, dry (relative humidity <4%), of adequate compressive and tensile strength (at least 25 MPa and 1,5 MPa respectively after 28 days cure for new concrete) and  not subject to hydrostatic pressure. They must be free from laitance, cracks and structural defects; clean and free from dust, grease, curing compounds, sealers or any other contaminants that would inhibit proper bond. Depending on subfloor condition and type, subfloors are treated by grit blasting, mechanical planing, scabbing, sandblasting, high pressure water washing or chemical stripping. After mechanical treatment of a subfloor, thoroughly vacuum all dust.
Steel and metal decking should be grit blasted, grinded or sand blasted, then degreased with MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone).

APPLICATION OF EPONAL 990 AS A PRIMER
Slowly add the hardener into resin (part A + B) while mixing, mix thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes with an electric drill and mixing paddle (speed: not more than 300 rpm). Then add water to the blend observing the following mixing ratio 100:93:60 (Resin : Hardener : Water) by weight or 1.5 litre of water for a 5kg kit of EPONAL 990 (Part A+B).
The obtained milky mixture is applied with a roller at a rate of 150 g/m².

Overcoating time: EPONAL 990 is a "waiting" primer, it means that even after a period of 48 hours it can still be over-coated with a solvent-free or water-based epoxy resin flooring with no particular treatment or sand spreading needed.
Example:
Over-coating of EPONAL 990 primer coat with EPONAL 328 after 7 days cure at 23°C : bond strength SATTEC is of 3.5 ± 0.1 MPa  (concrete fails).

APPLICATION OF EPONAL 990 AS A BINDER FOR REPAIR MORTARS AND GROUTS
Slowly add the hardener into resin (part A + B) while mixing, mix thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes with an electric drill and mixing paddle (speed: not more than 300 rpm); add the required quantity of sand to obtain trowel-applied mortar or grout.
Trowel-applied repair mortars: mix by weight 1 part of EPONAL 990 (blended) with 7 parts of 0.2-0.5mm sand.
Grouts: mix by weight 1 part of EPONAL 990 (blended) with 7 parts of mixed sand (3 part of 0.2 to 0.5mm sand with 1 part of 0.01-0.2mm sand).
